About the Art

Kologos’ paintings span an expansive thematic range, approached with intentional subtlety. Through intricate layers and profound creativity, each work constructs a contemplative space, encouraging viewers to consider the complexities of modern social discourse.

Their distinctive artworks feature a window embedded within each canvas, containing a concealed mechanism that periodically changes part of the content on the surface. This ongoing transformation disrupts the static nature of traditional painting, creating an experiential, interactive piece that invites viewers to engage with a constantly shifting visual narrative, one that responds to the passage of time and the viewer’s presence.

Kologos' works originate from printed canvases, which are then built up with layers of various paints and lacquers. The addition of diverse fillers disrupts the flatness of the surface, introducing a textured, multidimensional quality that invites a deeper, sensory engagement with the materiality of the piece.

About the Artists

Kologos is an art collective founded in 2014 by Swiss brothers Frank Baumann (b. 1963, Bern, Switzerland) and Philipp Baumann (b. 1956, Bern, Switzerland). Frank is based in Ins, while Philipp resides in Lausanne.

The collective specializes in contemporary painting, utilizing a unique blend of printed designs on canvas, which is then enhanced with layers of various paints, fillers, and lacquers. Its innovative artworks incorporate a concealed mechanism within the canvas, featuring graphic PVC pages that rotate, altering the image over time. This unique technique allows the paintings to transform analogically, creating an evolving timeline that engages the viewer in an ongoing visual experience.

The subject matter of Kologos’ work reflects the full spectrum of human existence, navigating the extremes of life - between heaven and hell, euphoria and despair. The collective’s canvases pulse with an exploration of time, change, and memory, delving into the emotional and psychological layers of human experience.

At the core of Kologos' practice is the investigation of transformation and temporal flow, with the kinetic element in each piece serving as metaphors for the fluidity of experience and the transient rhythm of perception. In this way, each artwork transcends the static image, becoming a living, shifting presence that engages with its observer.

Kologos has exhibited their work in prestigious venues, including the National Museum in Vaduz, Liechtenstein, the Folium in Zürich, Switzerland or the Kunsträume, Zermatt, Switzerland. The collective’s works are housed in various private collections in several European countries, the Middle East, China, and the USA, reflecting the international acclaim and demand for their unique approach to contemporary art. Through these exhibitions and their global presence, Kologos continues to establish itself as a significant force in the contemporary art world.
